    AMMO questio

Ok...this is a general milsurp ammo questions thread.

I have a 1943 K98 and two bandoliers of 1943 8mm ammo. Can I shoot the 1943 ammo? It is magnetic. Can I assume it is corrosive and need to treat the barrel accordingly? Where can I get good ammo to shoot with this gun?

I have a 1953 CMP Garand in 30-06. I have three bandoliers of greek m2 ball, unknown date. I believe this is good to go to shoot. Where, besides CMP can I get ammo? Any good modern day ammo suggestions?

I have a lee enfield in. 303 British..where can I get good, cost effective ammo.

    Thanks!!

Pretty sure your 8mm is corrosive.
The Greek .30-06 M2 ball should be OK to shoot in the Garand as it was made for it. It is likely magnetic (thin steel film over the bullet) which may cause problems at ranges that prohibit any steel in ammunition.

      Don't know about your 8mm.

The Greek M2 ball is usually headstamped HXP with a year. To the best of my knowledge all the Greek M2 ball is non corrosive. There are some commercial loads that are spec'ed for the Garand.

All the mil surp .303 ammo is essentially gone. You can buy commercial .303 from several manufacturers -- but it's a bit pricey.
This .303 is very close to Brit spec.

You can shoot it, but Nazi era ammo is getting rare.

Yugo surplus is still available, but getting rare, although Persian surplus is now available. No experience with it though.

All surplus 8mm Ammo should be considered corrosive.

It is good ammo to shoot (and reloadable). As far as I know, the only place you can get Greek .30-06 is from CMP, any others selling it, got it from CMP and are reselling it for a profit. Generally speaking, ammo should be limited to that designed for the M1, due to potential for damage from a pressure curve outside the design. You can get an adjustable gas plug and shoot anything in it. (Google m1 adjustable gas plug)

You can't. Surplus has dried up, Privi Partisan is probably the leas expensive, but is not cheap, at ~$15 for a box of 20 (excellent brass for reloading though).

Best advice for .303 ammo is handloading.

I'd stay away from the Persian stuff though IMO. Its not very reliable, like battery acid, and kicks like a horse. Stick with SOG stuff. Reliable, good, and fairly accurate.

Agreed, I would keep the Nazi ammo and find other stuff to shoot, but that's just the collector (hoarder) in me. Where you located? I have some 8mm if you want to trade?

For 303 Brit: Try gun shows (you going anyways-right?) you'll have to pay tax but no shipping and you'll be able to look at it.
FYI - Go early! (IMO) If you get there later on in the day most of the 303 stuff is all ready gone.

Does the 8mm ammo have a headstamp that looks like this?

Many cmp matches also teach how to use the M1 garand. There are a few in southern cal and if you want to learn how to use corrosive ammo in a Garand and how to maintain it, you might look into one of the cmp matches

They are fun and relatively inexpensive
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Prvi .303 is your best bet in that dept. Tried the soft point 180s, not bad either.
