    Is 7.62x54r wrong?

according to 7.62x54r.net m44 ceased production in russia in 1948- http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinM44S.htm
The mosin I just bought was advertised as a russian m44, but has a serial number of 1954. Whats going on here? Did I not buy a real russian, if so, it doesn't matter THAT much to me, but I would like to know where it was in fact made. I guess I don't have that much to complain about, it only cost me $150 and has a very nice bore.

Probably not Russian. Other Soviet countries and Allies continued to make them after Russia stopped. Post up photos of the receiver markings...

Did they still put dates on the action tang on M44s?

With a '54 date it could be Romanian, Hungarian, or Polish. Can you post a pic of the receiver?

The Soviets did stop production of the M44 in 1948. However, Poland, Hungary, Romania, and China produced them in the 1950s. The rifle you got is most likely Romainian, as it's triangle arsenal mark is easily confused with the Izhevsk triangle.

Pics would be awesome, but at $150 you did just fine.

I'm assuming you meant to say "barrel date of 1954", but it is entirely possible for the serial to be 1954... which is it?

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

                        Serial numbers usually look like:

Cyrillic letter Cyrillic letter Number Number Number Number
                        AAXXXX

(I know there are 3 number ones and I wouldn't doubt there are some 5 number ones out there, but I don't remember)

Dates well that's easy they will either be 18XX or 19XX (and no you wont find a 18XX M44 )

                          m44

The Nagant M44 is an awsome low cost shooter..You're gonna be thrilled with the rifle...Just play it safe and clean the rifle well with the proper cleaners if you even remotely suspect that the ammo you are shooting could be corrosive. I learned a tough lesson with this. I purchased a large quantity of 7.62x54r from sportsmans guide a few years back. This ammo was advertised as 1980's production non-corrosive. Long story short....the ammo was corrosive. Like a lazy s.o.b. i didn't clean the weapon right after shooting and just assumed that sportsmans guide knew what they were selling. When I returned to the gun about a week later, I noticed mucho rust throughout the bore, chamber and bolt face....needless to say I was ticked. I managed to get it all cleaned up and have never....ever repeated that catastrophee..Good luck with you new M44 they are great guns
