Trial by fire parts kit.

I am interested in getting started in gunsmithing. Now before you tell me to move the topic to the GS board, I'm more interested in an approximate appraisal, and what the other C&R addicts would think of such an act.

I am going to try to purchase an MP44 parts kit, including the 3 times slashed receiver, reweld it, build the rifle back to Herr Schmeisser's original specs, and attempt to get it to function as a semi automatic rifle. All in all, I will probably spend about 6000 dollars to get this rifle functioning.

My primary question is, how much is a rewelded rifle in good, functioning condition worth?

That sounds like quite a project. Where can you get Sturmgewehr parts kits? Post some pics when you can.
Because milsurp.

Every so often re-welded and correctly altered semi MP44's turn up on Gb - between $8 to $10K.
The semi PTR 44's are often over $6K now.

Beyond tig welding the receiver to the correct dimensions, there is quite a lot of work to be done internally, not only inside the fire control in the grip section to make it semi-auto only, but also to the bolt, so that a full auto bolt and carrier cannot be exchanged.

Of course it can all be achieved legally, as there is nearly always a way if you have the time, money and mechanical know how.
There is a thread on semi-MP44 builds on the GK43 forum - and you could try the weaponeer forum, too.

I own an MP44 kit and was bidding on the PTR semi receiver with barrel and internals that was on GB - but it went over $3500 and was too rich for my blood at the time, I wish I had stayed in the auction now.

Pit.

You will also have to make it California legal - which is 100% possible to achieve, as well - I know you know this, I just added that line so you don't have to have a half dozen reminders, lol.

Alex, that would be a monumental undertaking for an experienced builder, the prices tell you that much. I know a lot of welders that can do amazing things, but I don't think any of them would tackle that job.
I would think this out long and hard, before committing to an investment that large.

FYI Probably not going to be able to find one for a long time, and at that point, not sure it I'll have enough moolah squirreled away. You mostly find them from private sellers. Most larger companies that find them build them up. They are no doubt drying up.

Anyhow, I figure if I'm going to get into gunsmithing, I'd make my first project a big one. I think it will be worth it. Even if i do destroy the parts kit in the process.

Ha, thanks for your concern. I am going to take into account my level of experience, the level of experience required for this job, and the amount of time before any parts kit will likely come into my possession, so I can use this time to increase my know-how and hopefully, not go into this as blind as I currently am.
