    M48 Mauser price

I been looking for a 8mm Mauser for a couple weeks. So I called a couple Big 5 stores around my area to check if they any in stock. One of the stores got the Yugo M48 for $399. . My question is do they usually go that high for a M48? All inputs would be appreciated. Thanks

Thats high. Current prices on their German K98s (Russian capture) are $400 for what they have left (if any). M48s in this area Merced, Atwater, Madera, Fresno I've seen for $350 or less depending on sale. Maybe they thought you meant K98? Generally the M24/47s with a straight bolt were a little better made than the M48's and are $200 at Big 5. The M48 from Big 5 I got is a dog and looked worse after I degreased it... and it has a sticky bolt.

Been trying to find a cheap one here in Utah after I snagged a spankin' new barrel in cosmo from Zatzava arsenal that Copes (i think) was selling. Looks like I should be skimming the classifieds here.

I really hope it is a K98, if that is the case I might go and check it out. But on the other hand, I don't think Big 5 carry K98s.
I will start to look at the marketplace more often for it. Thanks for the replies.

Big 5 does carry K98's. I'm picking up a Russian capture duv 41 Monday. They are leftover from the last big import a few years ago. They are very scarce but I ran across a couple recently. I don't discourage anyone from buying an M48 if they are great rifles. Many people have great examples of these, but I feel I got burned on mine. With the amount of cosmoline and other crap in Yugoslavian rifles it's hard to make a good judement on fit, finish, and funtionality of these at the store. One of my 24/47s was a total hag of a rifle until I totally degreased it. Now its one of my favorites. But these were mostly (if not all) made prewar and the M48s are post war communist production. At at least $100 less I don't think you can go wrong with a 24/47 for a great Mauser.

$399 is the Big5 price for their m48. I just bought one.
But...they sold it to me for $299. They told me I just missed the sale and were impressed I came ready with safe affidavit ready.

Something is screwy about all this. Does Big 5 leave it to their managers to mark things up or down if so desired? Surely a real K98 should bring more than a Yugo in a legitimate market.

Now that you mentioned it. My friend and I went to a local Big 5 to check out Mosin. The price tag on the Mosin was $149, but the manager bumped it down to $120 for my friend. So I think they ( the store managers) can mark down the price.

the way big 5 works is that the normal price is double the standard price and when their stuff is on sales then you get the real price and the managers have to power to give you the last "sales" price if you ask them
