A few weeks ago I went into a local pawn shop to see if they had any cool old guns. When I first walked in I saw about 10 old hammered SxS's that the guy had hanging randomly on the walls. Which at the time I thought was a good sign. I asked the owner if he had any old Winchesters for sale and he said no but he gave me a card of a guy that might. While talking to him I see on the wall behind him 8 Winchester and Remington pump .22's, one of which was an early R12 with an octagon barrel and crescent buttplate that I had been looking for for a few months. I asked him if he wanted to sell it and he said "not right now its more for decoration". I asked if he would be willing to sell any of the pump .22's to which he said "not right now but maybe when I retire in a few years". I told him I had cash in hand and that noone would notice if there was only 7 hanging up there instead of 8 and guess what his response was.....thats right! "not right now". I noticed under a low shelf on that same wall was a Winchester SRC 1894 that was in pretty good shape so I asked about buying it and I got the same response "not right now". By this point I was getting a little frustrated and asked if I could at least see the 94. He reluctantly pulled it off of the wall and handed it to me and even covered in years of dust it was still a very nice 94. The only fault I could find was a weak main spring. I tried for the next 10 minutes to talk the guy into selling it to me but no such luck. I handed it back to him and even though I already knew the answer I still had to ask about an old scabbard hanging below the 94. This time I beat him to the punch and said "let me guess....not right now". He laughed and said "howd you know?" I gave him my card and told him if he changed his mind don't hesitate to call.

I walked out of there not only disappointed and frustrated but also completely confused. I have never been in a pawn shop where I had cash in hand and couldn't buy anything! From my past experiences with pawn shops I thought EVERYTHING was for sale?!

He had a few modern shotguns in there but they weren't actually his to sell they belonged to the guy who's card he gave me. Basically he just sold jewelry.

A local antique mall has (or had, haven't been in there for a decade) a Krag 1892 rifle with bayonet, campaign hat, Colt 1902 .38 auto, 1911 .45 auto and some other stuff on the wall getting rusty by the month. The owner of the mall had no interest in selling them nor maintaining them. What a shame.

Anyone been in Grundman's in Rio Dell, Humboldt county lately? Paul Grundman was big influence on my firearms addiction back in the early 70's. They used to have racks of C&RS in there! Wondering if they still do?
