    Garand day at the range

Gray one is a fully match prepped .308, bottom one is a 30-06 Fulton Armory build on a Springfield receiver. Both are fantastic shooters.

            It is.

A good friend of mine prepped this one a long time ago, and used fiberglass stock. God only knows where he got it from, but the rifle is bedded into it and the stock has some heft to it. Solid, solid shooter.

              How did they shoot, accuracy-wise?

Didn't put them on paper, but regularly hitting 8" steel at 100 yards, offhand. Both have Criterion barrels.

I've used 168 gr Nosler custom competitions over 46 grains of IMR 4064 in my Garands to good effect. I recently bought a load of those "Factory Overrun" 30.06 's that Midway was selling. Lapua brass with 167 gr Lapua bullets. They seem to be Creedmoor Sports rounds which CMP sells.

I've been using factory second 168gr SMK's for decades, and do quite well with them. A while back, Midway had a sale on factory second 175's, so I stocked up. They fly pretty well, too, and didn't require much load dev tinkering.

I use the Nosler175gr Custom Competition for my Remington 700 1,000 yard gun. Those are VERY nice bullets, and relatively affordable in the precision bullet arena.

Great looking pair of Garands! How does the .308 work? I don't know much about them, is it using an insert in the magazine or receiver to shorten the gap or is the receiver shorter or created differently somehow? I know the CMP had some .308 versions for sale recently. I was tempted but couldn't really justify a purpose for it since I already have a 30-06.

the receiver is the same, no modifications. the rifle will function perfectly.

but being able to load two different cartridges is somewhat problematic. the Navy saw this; that service commissioned the 7.62 NATO conversion. they specified a block be inserted at the front of the magazine to prevent the loading of the shorter cartridges. these spacers were of plastic/polymer, white in color.

So other than the barrel they are identical to the original 30-06?
