    Ishapore 2A1 questions

Hey guys, a few questions about the legalities of importing an Ishapore 2A1 from an out of state private party seller:

Does a rifle receiver marked 1966 qualify as a C&R under California penal code? It's not over 50 years old, but it's marked as a C&R in the ATF's list. I assume state law restricts the ability to have this rifle shipped directly to my door? I am a 03 FFL.

I understand some of these rifles have 10 round mags, but I believe the 12 round mags are more prevalent. Where can I get a reliable 10 round mag for this rifle? Also, do M1A stripper clips work in the 2A1?

    Thanks!

It's C&R in California, but because it isn't 50 years old yet it has to be transfered through a California licensed dealer, unless you travel out of state to pick it up.

Don't know about the stripper clips, but pro-mag makes a great 10 round box. Picked up a pair at the last gun show for $10 or so a piece. Enjoy the piece of history; with a little action and bolt work they shoot really well.

Yes, the M14 type clip works fine in the 2A/2A1. The 5 round clip with one bump on the side is the NATO standard clip and will work with the M14, FAL magazine loader, L1 magazine loader, C1 and Belgian top clip loading cover, etc.

Damn, that's what I was afraid of. Now I have to think if it's worth doing a transfer out of state for one, because the rifle I'm eying is under $300 but in pretty good condition.

Other than a good cleaning, what are you suggesting the OP should do to the action?

These rifles are good for headspace for 7.62 NATO, but tend to have excessive headspace for .308 Win. (7.62 NATO brass has a much thicker base web and therefore 7.62 NATO allows .013 inch more max headspace than .308 Win.)

In fact, due to the design margins (or lack thereof) of the basic SMLE action, it's probably a good idea to both use 7.62 NATO brass and reload it at reduced pressure, such as with data for .300 Savage.

              Safe shooting,

So just to confirm.....I have an Ishapore 2A1, if I plan to sell and ship in California, I can ship to a 03FFL C&R holder no problem correct? Thanks!

                  Nope.

Currently, California C&R FFLs can only have C&R long guns that are over 50 years old shipped to them. C&R long guns that are less than 50 years old and C&R handguns of any age have to be transfered through a California licensed dealer.

Starting in 2014, California C&R FFLs who also have a COE will be able to receive C&R long guns of any age directly.

Hmm I thought the the 50 year old thing was only for CandR for deals within CA. Coming from outside I thought the federal definition of C and R took precedence and therefore a BATF defined Cand R rifle (like the 2A1) could be shipped direct to an FFL03.

The Feds require FFLs to follow State and local laws. When an out of state seller ships a firearm to a buyer in California, CalDOJ considers the transfer to be taking place in California.

Oh crappo. Never mind then I had a plan to get one of those also before the tracking/registration/confiscation bill comes in in 2014.

                            @crunch130:
Lapped locking lugs, polished "extractor slide" and feed ramp. The aftermarket ball bearing triggers are a nice touch. Nothing that would touch the headspace. Good call about reloading reduced; I'll need to remember that one.

So get one. It will be in the dealers bound book, but not registered.
