GOA Reports Congress Considering CMP Shotgun Sales

Posted on social media... the bill in question is the house version of the National Defense Authorization Act. Apparently the senate version contains no such language. So for this to become reality, the two versions of the bill would need to be reconciled in conference to contain authorization for these sales. If green-lighted, the earliest one might expect to see sales would be sometime in 2026.

Comment thread on the GOA post is worth reading.

Thanks for the heads up, would be interested in obtaining a shotgun through CMP, so far I have M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, 03 Springfield, and 1911A1.

Hard to say. According to the coverage I've seen, the focus is on pump-action shotguns.

It's also possible that some older shotguns, like the Ithaca Model 37, Remington Model 10/31, Winchester Model 1912/1200, which were all used in conflicts dating back to the Vietnam War, might also be available through the CMP if the current language in the NDAA makes it to Donald Trump's desk.

It would be so badass to have a "Property of the U.S Government" marked shotgun with arsenal marks!

I'd be a buyer 100%. They've got smallbore stuff right now, though you already missed out on the 52B and Cs.

Ithaca Model 37's you say? I'll take one that can slam fire with the duck bill spreader choke, please.

This could get expensive. I can't seem to resist USGI shotguns.

Was thinking along those lines as well. Unfortunately the numbers are probably small, maybe no more than 2000-3000 shotguns total. According to the NRA, around 27,000 total were delivered to the US military through the Vietnam era. How many of those are still serviceable? The CEO of the ODCMP (responding to a comment on this update) wrote "Language is in fact included in the ongoing 2026 National Defense Authorization Act that would add shotguns to the authorized transfer list from the Department of War to the CMP. The House and Senate both recently approved the NDAA and it is now pending the President’s signature to become law. The provisions allow for each Military Department to make a one-time transfer of allowable, surplus shotguns to the CMP. The quantities of shotguns that are both allowable/compliant (not short barrel) and surplus is to be determined but I don’t expect large numbers will result from this." (Emphasis mine.)

So I am not holding my breath.

Someone who used an Ithaca 37 on the job said "They are basically bulletproof." They had to fire a hundred rounds each when training and collectively one shotgun might have 2000 rounds fired in a single training day, by a whole shift of deputies, and they never failed. He said that "you could use it as a club or a crutch as needed and you could stuff the action with mud, leaves, dogsheet, whatever, and it just worked."

I was considering the purchase of a modern Ithaca 37 when this news came out, but it is not urgent, so who knows...

                    ================

Looks like Ithaca is offering a modern reproduction of the trench gun.

3 grand is a bit excessive for the repro.

I doubt any of the older trench guns like WWI and WWII 1897s, Model 12s, Stevens, or Ithacas are left. They're probably to be more modern pump shoguns like Remington 870s or Mossberg 500s, and not likely to be in a 'trench gun' configuration.

If I were to be more specific, I think they might specifically be those that were in use from the mid 1960s to the 1980s, so maybe the Stevens Model 77E or Winchester 1200, and the Remington 870s, and Mossberg 500s.

                        .

I saw Winchester 1200s at Camp Roberts in 2007 that had gone to Iraq and back again. They were riot length, 4 rd tube magazine. I imagine there are 870s and 590s as well as 1200s considered obsolete. Overseas rod and gun clubs once rented shotguns to servicemembers for skeet and hunting. Maybe those will be available too.

Any new news on this? I've checked around, have not seen anything. Then again, I may be looking in the wrong spots. CMP is now also having Gunbroker do their sales and auctions.
