Picture requirement for C&R handgun reporting?

I picked up a few C&R handguns out of state and went through the CFARS reporting on my return. However, they were all bounced back with the following message

The California Department of Justice has received your electronic application; however, it cannot be processed for the following reason(s):
    • Please provide clear full-length pictures of both sides of the firearm with the slide pulled back, a close up of the serial number, magazine release, make/model and resubmit within 30 days with your Reporting Form for processing. Per Penal Code 30800, possession of an assault weapon as defined in PC 30510 and 30515 is a violation of law and a public nuisance. Failure to do so will result in your transaction being rejected and the firearm not recorded in your name. Fees will not be refunded.
Is this something new? I dont remember ever having to do this before

DOJ wants to make sure none of your acquisitions have "assault" features.

Send them the pics. Be sure a post-it note reading "you're an idiot" is somewhere in frame

The only time they had me send pics was for an M1 Carbine. I figured they wanted to be sure I didn’t have the para stock. But a handgun??! They didn’t require pics when I registered my AZ purchased CZ82.
