    Help a Mosin new guy?

So I am taking apart my mosin because I want to know how it works and to clean the bore and man I am having a heck of a time with the larger barrel band. I am maybe 20 minutes in and I only have it less than a 3rd of the way off. I am going millimeter by millimeter and my fingers are getting raw haha. Starting to fear that I am going to have to do the same thing to get it back on.

    Is there a trick?

Ok, I got it. The top part of the wood grip was coming along for the ride. I pushed it back down and the ring slid off.

Good to hear, mine is pretty tight too. It should loosen up a bit after its removed a few times. SEE HOW SIMPLE THE RIFLE IS?? LOL

The rear barrel band can be a major pain. Try removing the cleaning rod, and using a small wooden dowel and a mallet to tap the band forward a little bit using the empty cleaning rod channel. Then, you should be able to slide the top of the band forward. Keep doing this until the band is clear of the stock.

That's what I do when I encounter a stubborn band.

EDIT: lol I see you got it, nevermind

Since I already have this thread going, what is the correct way to clean the stock? I don't want to strip anything just clean some grime off. I have some mineral spirits from another project will that harm the finish? Steam?

I'd advise, since I have an ex sniper '43 izzy and a '43 izzy M38, after the first cleaning and cosmoline removal, DO NOT FULLY DISASEMBLE YOUR MOSIN. take my advice, you don't want any movement in the parts while shooting, on my '43 izzy ex sniper the top wood had movement which is bad because it could become loose, don't fully disasemble if it's not necessary. Take my advise from a fellow mosin owner. Now that you have a mosin you have been infected with mosinitis and you will definitely want to buy more in the future. Deals certainly surface every now and then. M38s go for 200$+ and I got my M38 for 75$ from a good friend. Enjoy your mosin and feel free to post more mosin stuff on CG, just make sure to include pictures in the topics so we can help you with any problem you see, most of us are Mosin owners, myself included. Enjoy your Mosin an if you need ammo use SGAMMO.COM
they have the mosin spam can of 440 rounds for 89.99, cheaper than you will find in CA it's 89.99$ shipped to your door! Enjoy your Russian workhorse! Cheers!

Here's my secret to cosmoline removal. Spray alot of windex on a rag and wipe it
on the wood, and the cosmoline will come right off. Don't use mineral spirits on the wood. Any more issues/questions feel free to PM me and I'll tell you my Mosin tricks and tips!

Mineral spirits is great for cosmoline removal on the metal parts, but don't put it on the wood.

Heat is a good method for the wood, never done or heard of the windex method deoxys987 is talking about.. interesting

I soaked my stock in rubbing alcohol, let it sit in the sun for 3 days and my hands still turned orange at the range. Plastic stock = no more snooki tinted hands!

Thanks for the advice everybody, I did completely break everything down and I guess ATI is really doing a pretty good job of cleaning all the cosmo off before they distribute these guys. I broke the bolt down and it was spotless, a little bit of cosmo on the cleaning rod, I was a little disappointed haha. Can't wait to clean the bore and see how it looks.

ATI cleans their rifles very well, the one I got from them had practically no COSMO on the metal parts. I used a blow dryer and a rag to bleed the COSMO out of the wood. Good luck.
