Value? Colt 1902 and Official Police

A distant relative (by marraige) has a Colt Official Police and what I think is a 1902 .38 Auto pistol.

Specs or (info on the slide/gun) are:

    Colt .38 Automatic
    Rimless Smokeless

    S/N 45XXX

    Patented 4/20/1897--9/9/1902

    ************************

    Colt Official Police 38

    S/N 713XXX

    Patented 8/5/1884--7/4/1905

I hope to have pics soon, which I'll post.

Any info as to a range of values?

    Thanks

Condition is everything. I recently sold a like new but less desirable 1903 pocket auto .38 for $950. The M1902 is in greater demand. The Official Police is much more common than the 1902 and priced accordingly. Try Gunbroker to get a feel for what they are bringing in auctions.

Thanks...I actually think (based on the SN and the reported markings on the slide) that it's a 1903 Pocket Hammer.

That might require that I buy it.

The Blue Book Of Gun Values, is likely the best most reliable source in print, for values. IMO, the most accurate values I have seen!

The serial number for the .38 auto puts it somewhere between 1923 and 1926. The Official Police is a 1944 vintage. If you get the .38 auto DO NOT SHOOT .38 Super ammo in it. You will launch the slide into your forehead. Inspect the cross wedge that holds the slide in place. If it is cracked don't shoot it because that is the only thing stopping the slide from coming off.
