    Thompson Center flint "reknapping"?

I loved those synthetic flints from TC. These are the now discontinued flints made from some god awful strong material. Has anyone had any luck in trying to reknap them? I've put them on my grinder (white and standard wheel) and they don't even make a "dent". No idea what material they're made from

I have no experience with those flints, maybe. I have a bunch of old flints I got from a buddy that he got sometime in the 70s or 80s, so who knows.

I don't think grinding is the way to go anyway, you might as well get a little hammer (I've poorly used a brass hammer) and give it a whack. I'm planning on making a tiny little stump anvil and tiny little hammer for myself and my buddy so we can fix our flints.

Thanks but these weren't "ordinary" type flints and can't be knapped in the ordinary way. And they were tough! Although I did not shoot my flint a lot they lasted well over two years before no more sparks. I loved them and it seems I am the only one who used them cuz they stopped making them. I believe TC did make some out of granite(?) but these were made from some other very tough material. They didn't wear down my frizzen though.

I had not realized they were synthetic. but if they lasted that long that's great and I wish there were more!

How about masonry saw and a jig to hold the flint?

Boy, do I feel dumb. turns out they aren't synthetic but agate... Still can't be knapped. I have a masonary blade for my grinder and might give it a try!

I had a friend that used those flints.
This was years ago. If I remember correctly he a diamond file to touch them up.

            Take care

Check your frizzen too. Might need re-hardening. Test it with a good flint known to produce sparks.

thanks. It seems ok. Works well with a standard type flint.... Just that they're a pain in the butt to work with...
