M1 Garand with a reflex sight

No, I’m not mutilating an M1 Garand so don’t start yelling at me!!!

Turns out the Army was experimenting with a reflex sight on an M1 Garand in 1947. The sight was called the T131 Reflex Collimator sight. It powered by sunlight in daytime and radium activated phosphorescent material at night. Here’s a link with pictures of it.

And here’s the Army report on it.

2 September 1947 test of the T131 Reflector Sight for the M1 GarandAn early attempt at a red dot type of sight, the T131 had some sort of luminous dot as the...

That's really neat. I find it surprising they had this technology back then. It is interesting to see that they ruled it out as a viable sight after only one simple test parameter shooting at 200 yards. And their noted complaint was that the sight was too large to be as accurate as the standard iron sights at such distance. They didn't bother to ask for a revision of the reticle to make it finer or more precise. It didn't even occur to them that the value of such a sight is in speed at close range where match grade precision is not needed. Thanks for posting.

Interesting, like a Nydar for the Garand. In this thread there are some additional images of back-in-the-day efforts to put optics on an M1 Garand, as well as more recent efforts.

                Excellent: thank you.

Correct, but it is the same as one in this thread (near the end). Can't do better than that; Gun Jesus be like, "so many firearms, so little time..." At least he showed the view thru the reticle. One can interpolate, particularly if one has seen a Nydar.
