    Almost there, but not quite

I have had this M1903 for many years, serial number 1461633

Recently I found my SRS data sheets after having misplaced them during a move ten years ago and looked it up. SRS records these serial numbers as being NM rifles:

    1461600A1NM 090239DCM RIFLE SALES 1922-42
    1461636A1NM 091735DCM RIFLE SALES 1922-42

Darn, the serial number falls right between these two DCM sales rifles. I might add that I can't see any signs that this was a NM rifle, no polished bolt rails, numbered bolt, star gauged barrel or CM marked bits. It was in a ho-hum condition straight stock and the barrel is dated 7-34, so it is probably correct for the serial number.

Last year I salvaged the C stock it currently is in from an abused stock that I got cheap and decided to use it on this '03. The stock has certainly seen better days, but the condition of it is roughly the same as the condition of the rest of the rifle, so as far as I'm concerned it's a good fit.

The stock has that been there-done that look to it.

I call it my "almost a National Match" rifle. dataurl032521.gif

Nice rifle, warts and all. 1903's are just plain sexy.

I found it at a gun show shortly after I moved to Reno. Priced at $600 with an excellent bore and crown, I couldn't say no. The straight grip stock that was on it had a lot of wear in the grip area and consequently, it had no visible cartouche.

The C stock was acquired last year off Ebay and was cheap (for a pre war C stock) because it had been cut off about 4" ahead of the upper band. It just so happened that I had a rather poor condition scant stock that I was saving as a front end doner. I put them together and was very fortunate in that the color of the wood was virtually the same. All-in I have well under a grand in it.

With the edge of Hurricane Helene keeping me inside for the last few days, I decided to tackle a stock repair project that I have been saving for just such an eventuality. The story begins with a high number '03 Springfield that I have had for a number of years Bought at a gun show for a cheap price, it showed the effects of
