    Another "new" shotgun

I will be the first to admit it, I am a sucker for orphan firearms. Sometimes when I see a poor gun that has been mistreated, I can't help but feel that I need to rescue it. Such is the case with this Remington Model 11-48 I found in my local gun store yesterday.

The store bought nearly 100 guns from a police auction and as I am a frequent buyer, I was offered it for a price I couldn't resist, although to be honest, I didn't try all that hard to walk away.

The poor thing has had the barrel cut to 18.5 inches and a bead sight silver soldered in place. At sometime or the other it had been allowed to get pretty severely rusted and was subsequently reblued. The action is tight and it functioned well with the twenty rounds of mixed bird shot and #2 buckshot I ran through it after I got home. I believe the barrel is original to the gun as it has the same sort of pitting on top as the receiver has. If it is original, the gun was made in 1954.

Some research on this model revealed that they were first developed in 1948 (hence the"48" in the model number) as a replacement for the previous Model 11, which was a licensed copy of the Browning A5. They were made from 1949 until 1968, when they were superseded by the Model 1100. They seem to have a good reputation as a rugged and reliable semi auto and about a half million were sold before the end of production.

My intention is to basically leave it as-is until I can find another barrel (it's gotta be real cheap) and use it as my primary truck shotgun. The only thing it is going to need is a new buttplate, I already ordered one and it should be here in the next few days. The stock and forearm are in remarkably good condition other than the usual assortment of handling bruises that accumulate over 70 years of use. I am considering putting a set of sling swivels and maybe a optic of some sort on it.

Sweet... what is a price range of something like that, under $400?

Makes me want to cut my barrel down on my a5 Japan made browning since I won't be able to convert it to a Rhodesian "A7"

I paid $300 OTD. A little higher than I would have wanted, but life is too short to quibble over a few bucks.
