    Old Mauser conversation

Does anyone here know much about the 8mm mauser? This is from my wife's grandpa who had a friend do this conversion.
it's now a 270 win. I can get better photos if needed.

That used to be a military Mauser, but what country would be a guess unless we can see the markings. It was converted into a nice hunting rifle in a good caliber, worth maybe $300. Sporterized milsurps just don't bring much money no matter how well they are done.

Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

Thanks for that! I'm not looking to sell but just see what I have. Here are more photos of the only markings I can find. I'm going to go through it and take out to the range this week. Maybe I'll start some load development for it.

Looks like it could be a Spanish Mauser. I agree with BBM’s assessment

The serial number does look Spanish and they had variants with chrome plated actions.

Does the action stick when you fire it? Spanish rifles have the reputation of having poor steel. My 1916 converted to 308 CETME from 7mm sticks, kicks hard when firing 7.62 NATO and I pounded my hand raw opening the bolt. My other Spanish Mauser variant sticks when I fire 8mm thru it, but nowhere as noticeable as that 1916 abomination. I hear others say their 1916 conversions are fine. So YMMV.

I haven't fired it yet. There's a chance I'll hit the range this weekend and if I do I'll take it.

You really should. I have a German K98 sporter that looks similar to yours, and with the original 8mm barrel it shoots really well. I killed a nice Whitetail this past November with it. One in 270 should awesome to shoot.
