Springfield 1903 help

I have a 1903 Springfield that's sporterized it's in 85-90% condition I was told that it's a 30-06 I chambered a round and it fits but haven't fired it yet I'm looking to sell the rifle but don't know the value any help would be much appreciated thanks cal gunners.... Ps the serial starts 747 and looks like it was made in 1918 thanks again -- angel

Sporter 1903s run in the $300 range, but that depends entirely on what's been done to it.

It has what I believe is a rear lineman peep sight and a very nice Monte Carlo style stock that's about it I can email or text pics I'm doing this from an iPhone an have never had luck posting pics from here thank you fir your help by the way would you agree this is a 30-06 if so I might not sell it and keep it as a game rifle it's heavy but seems true what are your thoughts cal gunners

Depending on the age of the rifle, it may not be safe to fire it, due to problems with the early metallurgy, specifically serial numbers below 800,000 from Springfield and by serial number 285,506 from Rock Island Arsenal.

If it was set up for a rear peep then it has been DT which cuts the value on it drastically. As mentioned above you need the serial number to verify LN form HN rifles.

The serial starts 747 and I has a 1-42 on the top of the barrel I checked the dates on line it's a 1918

Is it an SA 747XXX? Starting of the serial number will not help if you don't state how many digits and it it is SA or RIA. Help us help you. You can not rely on barrel date as the tube could have been changed. Besides it is the receiver you are concerned about of blowing up.

That number falls within the LN danger zone. Good for a wall hanger IMO. I would not shoot it.

It has been rebarrelled, & with the dangerzone S/N, it looks like a good wallhangar.

Depends on who sporterized it. Does it say Griffin & Howe on it anywhere? Pics would help.
