CMP Expert Grade M1 Garand in 308

    Hi,

What do you guys think about 308 M1 Garand, looks like its a last batch of them for sale at CMP.

What's the cheapest way to satisfy Markmanship requirement? and is Winchester receiver worth $200 more?

    thanks

If I was going to get a 308/7.62, I would consider picking up one of the Mod1 7.62 NATO ones they have for sale as it has some USGI history going for it. As for spending extra on a Winchester receiver, since the ones being sold by CMP are ones they have assembled, I personally wouldn't spend extra for a Win receiver.

I absolutely love shooting mine. It's not a collector but it's worth every penny with the fun I have with it. It also turned out to be a low 6 digit receiver which is fun.

I have eight Garands in my pile, and the one I shoot the most is the .308 version.

None of the cmp ones are collectors right? They are mix masters, but I am thinking that they will go up in value as the supply dries up.

Whats the cheaper alternative compared to garand collectors association membership to meet marksmanship requirement? GCA membership is $35. Appleseed is $25 but have to attend events.

                Thanks

They're all collectible to some extent or another. Some real gems come out of the CMP, as well as the occasional dog, but generally they ship rifles that exceed the description and outvalue the cost. Milsurps by their very nature are going to be "mixmasters" and the argument between "correcting" them and leaving them as issued for war will likely never end.

I don't know, 35 bucks is pretty dang cheap.

My opinion is that a .308 Garand is a lot of fun to shoot, and one with CMP provenance should hold or increase in value going forward. It is not a "collectable: firearm, but a fairly desirable one - IMO. A Winchester receiver would generally be worth more, but in the context of a "newly built from parts with new .308 barrel" - I don't think so.
