Westchester Trading Post 1903 sight micrometer

I recently was perusing an auction and found several interesting items, including this gem. It is a 1903 Springfield rear sight micrometer, similar to the PJ O'hare tool, used to set the rear sight more precisely.

This one was sold by the Westchester Trading Post. Apparently, back in the day, the Westchester Trading Post was a well known fixture in target shooting circles and their products were well thought of. The Westchester Trading Post sight micrometer was manufactured by L.S. Starret compnay, the well known precision measuring tool company.

These are used by target shooters to accurately set the rear sights of 1903 rifles

Did you win the auction? As a machinist by trade, I think that is really cool that Starrett made those sights. You can see the resemblance in the font used in the markings. Neat!
If it ain't broke, keep fixin' it 'til it is...

So is this more akin to a gauge? Or does it actually mount to the rifle?

It is a gauge used to adjust the sight on the 1903. Similar to the PJ O'hare gauge.

Here is a Youtube for PJ O Hare accessories. The explanation for the use of the sight adjuster starts at about 3:30...
