Black powder grains help *pic update*

So I recently got myself a golf ball mortar. I also got some pyrodex powder. The only thing I can't seem figure out is how much to use. It calls for 140 grains. Help!?!?!

You need to get a powder measure specifically made for black powder. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/431...0-grains-brass

I'll order one of those up, thanks.
Is there a way I could convert it to cc's or anything like that so I can use it this weekend?

You may be able to figure it out from this article.

Why pyrodex? 3F or 2F Goex. But, really, why in the world would you want a "golf ball mortar?" I know, you just want to see what it will do. A lot of folks like to play with matches and then progress to gun powder to see the effects. Perhaps the next thing will be a subject on the six o'clock news. Hit a golf ball with clubs. jeeze. You must be really bored.

Weigh out a half ounce and let fly. More or less as you get results. I use a pound for a 10-pound shot so that should give you a starting point. I doubt a golf ball will cause back pressure. 3f would be best I think.

Many people shoot these competitively and even more shoot them for fun. Your complete ignorance and you inability to comprehend that, goes a long way to supporting the hypotheses that you have a single digit IQ.

I keep looking at a golf ball cannon. It has been on my want list for a while. If my lathe was just a little bit bigger I would make it myself. One of these days I may buy a barrel and build the carriage myself. It would be about the same scale as my current project. They would look good together. I would have to have CSACannoneer give me lessons on firing it though.

I remember there was a golf ball launching cannon contest at the WPA (Western Pyrotechnics Association) get together in Havasua every year. The contestants would make their own black powder for the event and compete to see who's was the strongest.

Rarely did a factory black powder win the event

The recipes usually involved charcoals made with Willow, which for some reason or another makes for the strongest black powders...

The event is scheduled each year for the SARA race track north of town. There are workshops on how to build fireworks of various types, usually mortars (the ones you see on the fourth of july). The show usually sports one of the biggest fireworks display, perhaps 40 times larger than your usual city display you would observe on the 4th.

Or you could just go to a driving range.....

OP, its really too bad you were attacked for asking a simple question, which has a simple answer of sorts, but which could also lead you into a path involving a tradition which is very rich in history and old revered black art technology. Why some folks need to attack others on the internet is beyond me, perhaps its a desire for attention, perhaps its frustration over impotance...or just male menopause. I mean, this is after all, the black powder forum isn't it?

                          ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????????????????

Oh...I could have just used a lighter!!

Any good gun shop should sell black powder measures. Is the powder your using Pyrodex RS? Un-scientific testing, wich i accept no liability for, shows a 1/2 Tablespoon measure borrowed from the kitchen should get you in the ballpark.
140 Grains Pyrodex RS by measure equaled 97.5 Grains weight on the scale.
1/2 Table spoon Pyrodex RS came out to 96.3 Grains weight on the scale.
