anyone have a spare cylinder pin to this

    hopkins and allen mfg
    ranger No. 2
    32 rimfire
    pat date march 28, 1871

bought some 1/4" round stainless rod, (about a millimeter to big), and am trying to whittle it down, primitive style, to help make it hold together, for a display that my father wants. stainless is hard!, using sandpaper. :0

Nice gun,and an antique too.H & A became "Hopkins and allen arms co" in 1898.I would not spend too much on one of these, as my book on H & A says over a million were made with various trade names stamped on these, sold cheap in hardware stores, etc.

Chuck the stainless and start over with a piece of hot rolled or cold rolled steel -- OR, Mic the diameter and see if a chunk of drill rod is available in that diameter or at least close to it.
Your photos do not show well on my old monitor, too large, too dark and distorted so I can't tell exactly what the pin looks like. If it is a simple pin with just a retaining groove, someone should be able to turn one for you at a reasonable price.
Just remember, there are no "five-minute" jobs.

thanks got it handled, got a better file, and although these pics may not be any better, (taken with a 10mp nikon), one is the cylinder pin, i made, and the other is it, in place on the "ranger #2..... and i was originally looking at cold rolled, then brass, and although it didn't take five minutes, (more like 25), i like the idea of SS, with the nickel.

and by the way, how did you know my name was chuck?

glad you got it whittled down -- appears to be functional
Nothing wrong with using stainless, just harder to work.
And it is a straight forward lathe job. the original possibly had a larger head at the end of the pin, knurled to get a good grip to withdraw it.

yeah, if you have a lathe, and by looking at pics. it is knurled, but it isn't going to functional, (but it is, everything works good, and is tight), but is for display.

            thanks for the suggestions
