    Miltech of Los Altos

Anybody done business with Miltech of Los Altos? I see they offer (among other things) what look like very nicely rebuilt '03 Springfields, and I'm thinking seriously of getting one from them. My collection is lacking one, and I really want to own and shoot the battle rifle that my grandfather carried in France in 1918. If any of you have dealt with Miltech and have some feedback to share, I'd sure appreciate it.

    Thanks!

I picked up a Winchestwer M1 carbine about 15 years ago. Rifle is a nice rebuild. No idea about the quality now.

Wow I didn't know anything gun related existed in Los Altos.
Lord, make my hand fast and accurate.
Let my aim be true and my hand faster
than those who would seek to destroy me.
Grant me victory over my foes and those who wish to do harm to me and mine.
Let not my last thought be 'If I only had my gun."
And Lord, if today is truly the day you call me home, let me die in an empty pile of brass.

Miltec takes mixmaster rifles and reparks them and polishes the bolts(incorrect for the rifle)force stamps them to make the parts 'match' makes them look all pretty and ships them in a pretty pine box and charges exorbanant (for what they give you) prices.....with no chance in Hades of you ever recouping your $$$$$$ in resale value.....

Ridiculously expensive prices for a mediocre superficial appearance? Are we talking about the same Los Altos?

IIRC, they're off Skyline Blvd - not far from the Los Altos Rod and Gun Club's range.

I have not owned one (nor would I) but I've worked on a couple.

Miltech does their 'rebuilds' along the same line as Mitchell's Mausers. Search here for Mitchell's Mausers, you'll see plenty of comments.

I think you can do a lot better than Miltech.

Are you sure your grandfather carried a M1903 and not a M1917? Although the M1903 was the standard rifle of the day, the M1917 was actually much more common.

Of course, the normal answer on a gun board is: Get one of each!

I bought my Miltech M1 back in 1992. They were MUCH more affordable then and, at least in my case, the rebuild was very well done. I bought a shooter, not a collector. I paid $700 at the time. At the time, POS Blue Sky import M1's were $350 or so.

I have no idea what they are putting out now.

Yep. I'm sure it was the Springfield and not the Enfield . . . and maybe I should have one of each!

I have handled several Miltech rifles.

The collectors rifles are supposed to be all matching rifles, all refurbished to a like new condition... Yet, I found several renumbered parts (force matched). Nice refinishing and wood work, but not worth the asking prices.

Yet, if I found a Miltech collector for sale say on gunbroker or at a dealer for a low price, I would pick it up to have a nice looking shooter..

I recently received a refinished Swiss K31 from Miltech and am quite please with the gun and the pre-sales service. I actually now have several other rifles on order from them. Their pricing is not the lowest, but is not unreasonable when compared to other shops like Fulton or National Match Armory when looking at comparable services. They have an interesting "special projects" list, and specialize in restoring all the old rifle scopes.

If something is advertised as "numbers matching", and is not received that way, that is a problem. I have dealt with the Miltech owner several times and would have a hard time believing that the shop would intentionally be deceiving anyone. Some of their rifles are rebuilt to original specs with new barrels/wood, whiles others are simply refinshed.
