    ? about surplus ammo

A friend of mine bought some surplus 30 06 ammo at a garage sale in Susanville. The bullet its self does not attract a magnet and it looks like aluminum a silver color. Does anyone have a clue what this stuff may be and is it corrosive? I could call for the case stamp if it helps. Thanks!

If the bullet looks silverish, then it's most likely cupronickel. If it's USGI, then it's most likely M1 ball or early run M2.

I'd say corrosive, I treat ALL surplus ammo and Wolf as corrosive.

        The case stamping would help.

Sure it is not 8mm Turk? The rounds do look similar.

sounds like WWI ammo!? Is it REALLY .30-06 and is it REALLY a US made cartridge?

Take some pictures, and don't shoot it!

treat all milsurp as corrosive even if your buddy swears it isnt - unless you have tested it yourself on metal.

Could be the M1906 and if so it may be collectable.
M1906 the original .30-06 cartridge consisted of a 9.7 g (150 grain), flat-base cupronickel-jacketed-bullet. Used till the end of WW1 This type of Bullet will foul the barrel quicker and is corrosive. more info on the 30-06 can be found at http://cartridgecollectors.org/30-06intro/

Silver or aluminum paint on the tip of a copper jacketed bullet could mean Incendiary or Armor Piercing Incendiary. Just the thing if you need to light cactus on fire, but legally problematic in CA. An all silver bullet sounds more like 8x57 or 7.65 Argentine.
