    1911 frame to destruction

I have a 1911 frame that cannot be repaired. (Don't ask me the condition, the thread is not about getting it repaired.)

Since it's on my DOJ register; I want it destroyed and reported as such.

So, how do I get that taken care of?

I make 1911 grips and would love to get ahold of a messed up frame so I don't have to do test fits on actual pistols. If there's any way, legally of course, to make this happen leaving the handle part intact, I'd be interested in getting ahold of it.

I'd use it as a paperweight. But then again, I'm a pack rat and don't like to get rid of stuff.

Well what I would do is chop it up into at least three pieces. Take a picture of it in that condition and then fill out this form.

Mail form with attached picture as proof of destruction.

I am familiar with the NLIP form; and they want verified destruction to process it. I am assuming it means someone like a gunsmith has to cut it up by acceptable means, recording the serial number and providing an affidavit of destruction.

If it can be destroyed in a way to preserve the area of the grips, I will keep you in mind and send that part to you.

Since you are posting this in the C&R section, if it is of Korean war era or older, you should document the frame/serial number for historical purposes; many collectors' groups of 1911s do their best to keep an ongoing registry as to serial numbers by type, (i.e., Remington, Colt, Ithaca, Singer, US&S, etc.) and they might be interested in at least knowing the make/serial and that the gun is no longer. You can find these online; especially Colt and war-time 1911 collectors, etc.

It also may help in corroborating production numbers, figures, dates of production; such as if is of a certain change, and that change was originally thought to happen at serial number 62516, and it is found the change is related to yours, but your is serial number 62941, it changes their perception of when changes or production occurred.

Knowing the gun by that serial is being destroyed is also helpful; first, it's known it survived the applicable war or period; second, it's confirmed it will no longer be around so the guess as to what is left is minimized by 1.

If some level of government had that information, what would they do with it? How would having that info benefit public safety? How would it benefit law enforcement?

The easiest way to get it out of your name, IMHO, which is what it sounds like you want to do, is to private party transfer it to somebody else. No filling out the form and sending to DOJ needed, and no worries that they didn't do it, or holding on to it for X number of months until you get a reply (and still hoping they get it right).

When you PPT it, it goes into the buyers name. Most FFLs will even give you (the seller) a copy of the DROS if asked to keep for your records that you sold it off. Even if you gave it away for free, the buyer will pay the PPT fee. You might even make a few bucks if you wanted to sell it and not just give it away.

And BTW, there is no such thing as "cannot be repaired" for a steel frame firearm. It can always be re-treated, welded, brazed, whatever, etc to fix it. Steel is great like that.
*->You are in Socal, I'll give you $30 for the frame (steel) site unseen and pay the transfer fee, even if it is like the one below. More $ if it is better off. Out of your name, in mine, and you make a buck.
And if you don't think it is worth anything, check this one out:

That is probably the definition of cannot be repaired, and there are still people looking to buy it

In Maryland we can turn guns into the state police for destruction and get your name off the paperwork since they are the ones that keep that info anyways. ? Maybe your local police /sherriff/CHP can do the same?
