Are the barrels of Colt 1911 and Colt 1911A1 interchangible?

they have been for me but you might run into an oversize that needs to have a bushing fitted for it

GI Issue 1911 and 1911A1 Colt's used a lot of hand fitting because of manufacturing tolerances. A barrel fit to one gun, may not be able to be fit in another. There are also two hood sizes, wide and narrow -- and I'm not sure they're interchangeable.

Thank you for your replies. I have a WW1 Colt 1911 but it has a replacement Springfield barrel. I am trying to find a correct Colt barrel to replace that.

If you find an original 1911 service barrel, chances are it will fit with no problems. Unless it has been altered somehow in the last 80 or 90 years. They were made on the "loose" side to aid in reliability and function in crappy conditions, as well as to facilitate ordnance overhauls by armorers in the field. The headspace dimension on the .45 automatic is almost .030" from go to no-go.

I found a replacement barrel for my 1911(1918) at the Costa Mesa gun show awhile back.
Bring a factory round to check the bore, put the bullet end in the exit end of the barrel.
Poor mans check but it works in a pinch.
