    50 cal black powder pistol

Hi I am pretty new to the black powder world and wanted to get a 50 cal black powder pistol. I found this one on gun broker and wanted to know if anyone knew anything about it. I cant really find any info on weather its good or worth the price http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=281234948

Haha I have one exactlyy like that. CVA kit that you put together yourself. Assembled mine 10 years ago and never shot it!

I don't know about the price but that is a modern barrel and chamber so it should be plenty strong for actual shooting versus wall decor status.

That looks like a good deal. CVA are supposed to be pretty good. Lyman has a similar one.

Nice looking percussion pistol for the price. This is an entry-level model and probably made from a kit. Not sure if CVA is still importing these, but others carry similar kits (Bass Pro Shops, Dixie Gun Works, etc.). The actual shipping cost is unknown so be sure to account for this if you bid. I would not go much higher than the current price myself. And of course, any BP gun can be shipped directly to your door -- no FFL required even in CA!

Here is a link to a similar CVA kit pistol in .45 caliber that sold here on CG last August: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=472340

get the rifle first - a lot more fun to shoot

I own several in 3 different cal.

I have the same pistol in 45 - very fun

              WARNING!!! Black powder is addictive

I have a CVA in .45 cal. Got it 15 years ago in a trade. They are good quality, but the kit guns leave a lot to be desired as far as fit and finish. I agree with animal661 as fara s geting a rifle first.

The CVa kit I have has excellent fit. They come rough since the idea was to clean it up and finish it yourself instead of a Lego set. I have seen some fine cva kits, just depends on how much work goes into them. This thread has me wanting to bust mine out and take it to the range!

I've got the .50 cal Hawken. What do I do now?

Is there a difference between black powder for this and the pistol?

                      No Difference
FG (1F) - Is used in large gauge shotguns and cannons.
FFG (2F) - Is used in most muzzleloading shotguns, large bore rifles, and pistols .45 caliber and larger.
FFFG (3F) - Is used in rifles and pistols .44 caliber and below and all revolvers.
FFFFG (4F) - Is used only for priming flintlocks.
