    What emcon5 said.

All Russian reworked rifles got completely overhauled, including the metal.

The bore looks almost new, very shiny and sharp lands. If I buy it, I will be firing non corrosive reloaded ammo.

My unrefinished BNZ4 K98 is not a RC and has a blued bolt.
        Soli Deo Gloria.

How do you know the Germans didn't touch it at some point---or that it just wasnt used that much?

I need to check it out in person, anyway.

Is the stock serial number on the left butt (Russian refurb) or the underside of the butt (original German location)?

Germans blued the bolts, as did the Russians in refurb.
German buttplates were white. Russian refurbs are generally blued, although I have had a number of RC stocks with original matching butt plates in white.
X on the receiver indicates Russian refurb.

Plum colored extractor is common in German K98s

All matching numbers on the metal is confusing. We really need pics...

OK, I will see if I can get pix this weekend if he comes down to our shooting range.

Actually the Soviets "Blacked" the guns. They did not truly blue them. Comparing the two side by side it's easy to see the difference. The Soviet refurbs will be a uniform dull black all over.

Well, if that is the case then this one fits the description about the dull black all over...
