    FN 49 Sniper

I didn't pay much attention at the time, but have just verified that the FN 49 I picked up @ Tabors a few weeks ago (8mm Egyptian) is the sniper model - has the female dovetail slots on the left side of the receiver. The stock is matching to the receiver cover & gun's receiver, but I'd say the stock's been slightly sanded. The metal is 100%, can't say if it's been refinished but I'd assume yes.

First, is an Egyptian sniper model worth markedly more than a standard Egyptian and where can I get the rail & mount. I'm assuming of course they're hard to find & expensive as hell.

I am usually wrong when I venture an opinion but I believe many FNs were made with the scope slots. My Egyptian has it. The full-on Egyptian sniper version had a cheekpiece on the butt like a British #4T and a secondary sling swivel position in front of the trigger guard on the bottom of the stock. I guess if you could get all of the pieces back together for it you'd have something pretty valuable. Right now you have a nice shooter!

It does have the sling swivel in front of the mag area. Northridge has the base and I understand that's sort of "step one" in getting the scope set up together. Guess I should look at this as a long term "replica" project.

30% of the 37602 Egyptian 49's produced have the machined dovetail on the receiver.

There were approx. 100 full Egyptian Sniper Rifles assembled by FN with the scope, and their serial# range is between 33600 and 34600.

          There were 2500 3 swivel rifles produced from around the serial# 33400 - 35800 serial# range.

If your 3 swivel rifle serial# is between 33400 and 35800, then it is an original 3 swivel rifle.

The original Egyptian Sniper rifle had 2 different scope variants (Meopta and O.I.P),cheek piece and muzzle brake (Same style MB as the Venezuelan contract).

I have seen some very nice 3 swivel rifles, and I almost picked up an original 3 swivel variant in 99% unissued condition for $1500, but I passed on it.

Hopefully your rifle is an original.. If not, enjoy the rifle, they are outstanding shooters and collectible rifles.

Thanks very much for the detailed information. My gun is serial # 338XX but I don't see any evidence of a cheek pad being attached at any time. With all those scope ready guns out there it's too bad some one doesn't make a repro mount.

Yeah, it seemed like alot of the egyptian FN's had the receiver cuts for the sniper mounts. Unfortunately there weren't very many of those sniper mounts/rings. And the ones out there are very very very pricey.

Who got the 308 version from Tabors???

Nope - or if it was I haven't heard about it yet. I think I did put up the "Tabors has lots of 49s" though.
