    junk range day....

Got all excited today and cracked open a new tin of 7.62x54r to go to the range. When I unpacked 'em they looked kinda funny but couldn't quite place what was wrong. So at the range I loaded up my nifty little Sako M39 and proceeded to blast away. However, all I got was click, click, click, click, click..... After I inspected the rounds it hit me what was wrong with 'em, they all have primers seated wayyy to deep. The whole damn tin, all of it. I happened to have some double tap with me so I tried out some of the barnes and nosler partition that they offered. I can't hit the broad side of a bar with my pristine bore and nice wood M39, its gotta go. But hey, at least my wife caught this nifty picture of me in south central Utah.

Do you think there is something wrong with the rifle? How much do you want for it?

That's Russian 147grn light ball steel core, good stuff. You have a rifle problem!
Use a Mosin tool to check your firing pin protrusion.

The factory ammo you speak of may be loaded with .308 diameter bullets, they won't shoot well no matter how expensive as the groove diameter is probably .310 or .311.

Do you or a friend have another Mosin you could cross-check the ammo with?

That really is a gorgeous M-39.

After my K-31, I'll probably get one of those (if I don't manage to buy a Swedish M-96 before I get there). Oh, I got my first gun when I was 17, it was a 91/30. Turning 20 this year and I'm just gonna face it: I will never buy a modern gun because there are too many C&Rs to collect! Too bad I wasn't of age even 10 years ago, where K-31s cost a little more than a 91/30. Jeez.

It is a cool pic! Did your wife shoot?
My wife would have been ticked for draggin her out in the snow for an unsuccessful shoot!
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

For record purposes: I ordered a bolt replacement kit from buymilsurp.com and found that my firing pin was NOTICEABLY shorter (bout 1/8th inch) and the tip of the pin was not symmetrical as the "new" pin. I installed the "new" pin and it protrudes just like every other mosin pin I've ever owned. That old pin must have broken and been reshaped or some Son of Finland killed himself a bucket load of Russians to wear it down that much.

You can actually move how deep the firing pin protrusion is with the teardrop multitool.

Sounds like a bolt problem then a ammo problem. This ammo will last you when your kids- kids have children.
