SKS removable magazine. Legal or not?

I know the magazine counts as three 922(r) parts, but is a removable mag legal in California or not?

Is their an American made non removable magazine that's reliable?

Depends. If you have a Yugo Zastava M59 or M59/66 then a detachable mag is okay. If you have a Russian or Chinese rifle specifically marked "SKS" then no, it is not legal.

It's a Yugo. There's no "SKS" on it anywhere that i can find.

I'm replacing the stock with an ATI stock and removing the bayonet. It's going to be a camping/jeep gun.

Before you start slapping a removable mag on a SKS type rifle, make sure that you check to see how the rifle was DROS'ed. If the DROS says SKS, then you are stuck with the fixed mag. If it is a M59 or M59/6X, then legally, you should be good to go. Just expect a lawyer to sort it out for you in court.

Most of the 10rd aftermarket magazines are not only detachable, but are junk anyway. Most will FTF at least once per magazine. I hear good thing about the Tapco 10/20 conversion from High Ready Tactical, since it is modified from one of the best SKS aftermarket magazines currently available.

Which ATI stock were you planning to put on your Yugo, by the way?

i wouldn't risk it you know it is an sks distributors call them sks and "sks with detachable magazine" has been an assault weapon in california for a very long time

Please read Harrot v. County of Kings. It's pretty darn clear that if the rifle doesn't have the right make and model on the side then it isn't a controlled rifle.

Whatever the DROS/4473 says is irrelevant if it's incorrect. That's the dealer's problem (which could indeed be a problem, they're supposed to properly identify firearms).

Just because someone writes down the colloquial "SKS" name instead of the proper make/model "Zastava M59..." does not change what the gun is.

The charge for illegal named AW possession is for what it says on the gun, not what some lackey wrote on the DROS/4473.

I personally like the way the SKS loads from the top with strippers. I think that I can reload with stripper clips faster than I would be able to with a duckbilled detachable. Just my .02 worth.


Now if one had pre-ban 20 or 30 rounders, that would be a different story.
