    First time C&R purchase question

I am looking to making my first C&R transfer from a fellow calgunner and I had a few questions. First the gun is a M1 Garand. He said the serial number on the barrel is dated 1955 and I am going to have him send me pics of it so I can verify it myself. My question is, do all of the numbers on the gun need to match in order to make sure it wasn't rebuilt at any time and still make it C&R eligible? I have heard that if it gets "modernized" with a new stock then that will make it not eligible for C&R but wasn't sure what else would. I hope all of my questions make sense and I thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

For starters, M1 parts are not serialized, so there is no way to know if they are original to the gun or not. You can eliminate parts, based on known dates of heat lots of various parts, but even if the markings are in the right range for the date of the receiver, there is no way to know they are the part the gun left the factory with.

Being rebuilt to original specs does not make it lose C&R status, even with brand new parts. Putting a military rifle in a plastic sporter stock would remove C&R status, but a brand new stock made to the original military specs would not.

The gun is how old the receiver is. My 1941 Springfield has a 1950 barrel on it, but that does no change the fact that the gun was still made in 1941.

        Good Luck!
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.

Tis better to have Trolled & lost, Than to never have Trolled, at all.
