    This old derringer....

Anyone able to point me where to get to find out a) if this is authentic and b) where I can take it to have it looked at?

Found it in an old mississippi law book with the center cut out....

It's a neat story either way. Are there any markings on the underside?

I certainly would not want to be on the wrong end of that, as it would surely derange me, and not in a good way. Have you slugged it yet to see the caliber?

Sure it's deranger and not derringer? The first one would be that which drives one to madness. The second would be a very old black powder gun.

Can't tell if it's authentic but it's VERY closely patterned after the original Philly Derringer.

Neat conversation piece, either way! If it is spelled D E R A N G E R , then my guess is a replica made by some old guy in a Pakistani Firearms sweat shop.

That looks too perfect in condition to be an original IMO.

What bookstore did you find it in, Ism415? Cool find!

amusing definition! You could take it two ways.

Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.

Can't really tell but on the 3rd photo but it kind of looks like there is a percussion cap on the nipple...
Just to be safe you have checked if it is loaded and that there isn't a cap on it right?

Interesting that the book has "Nelson" on it and the pistol has a N on it.
I would research the name and find out if there is any history behind it. May make it much more valuable.

Haha I was waiting to see if anyone was going to say anything about my spelling. After I posted it I realized I spelled it wrong and figured I'd keep it misspelled. Haha

Ya that's how I felt but so far it does have any replica signs. If it was kept in that book it could be the real thing but it just never saw the light of day? Derringer.... Just sayin

How would I Beable to check if it was loaded other then firing it?
I've checked the name and found a murderer with that name but no authors. Haha. Interesting. Mississippi river law gun in side it with a murderers name on the cover.....

to check to see if it's loaded is easy. Pull the ram rod out and stick it down the barrel. pull back out and measure to see if it went all the way to the end. A charge would have a .5" long bullet sitting on top of at least .25" of powder, probably more so the ram rod would stick out at least 1

I had to pick at the spelling... it was phunny with the definitions being so neato.

The gun looks like a kit, but you will know when you look carefully at the rifling. the kits will have been very obviously machine made. the real thing will look crude and not quite even. still kind of cool to have sitting on your shelf. I have a couple of the old BP kit guns sitting on my shelf. DR

Do they have BP Derringer kits? Where? That would be a fun project!
