    Question on proper C&R storage

I have searched but haven't found any real info on storing rifles "muzzle down". Reason why I ask is because I would like to optimize my space because it is starting to get cramped...

Other than rust (which a muzzle cap filled with lube wont fix), and dings and dents would there be any real longterm issues?

Storing muzzle down prevents residual oil from the bore draining back into the action and then down into the wood where it will soften the wood and permit the softened wood to compact and allow movement of the action. When this happens cracking of the wood is next. Another reason to store muzzle down is on sporting arms with recoil pads, the weight of the firearm sitting on the recoil pad can eventually cause it to lose some cushioning. If you store muzzle down be sure to protect the muzzle from dings; the muzzle is the most critical part of the barrel for good accuracy. I store long arms interspaced muzzle up and down to get more room in the safes. The arms that are butt down have the action open and a cleaning patch laid just aft of the chamber in the action to catch fluid draining from the bore.

It's like any other gun. A cool, dry place is best. Muzzle up, down, sideways...it doesn't matter. I personally like using gun socks no matter how long/short term the storage. I have a couple packs of silica in my safe since I live on the coast and no issues to date.

Again, above and beyond the call of storage duty, but great advice. I've come to expect nothing less from you.

I use socks also. Anyone know where I can buy in bulk?
