I'm going to take a wild guess and say early Webley or Smith and Wesson topbreak.

That looks like an Enfield Mark II.

        Your getting warm.

It is an Enfield made cannon. .455

        Hint, it's older.

Enfield MkI caliber .455 introduced Sept. 8, 1880. The MkI and MkII cartridges were .455 while the MkIII was .476. This .455 was not the same as the later MkI .455 Webley cartridge which was introduced in 1891. The MkI .455 Webley cartridge could and was designated to be fired in the older Enfield MkI and MkII revolvers.

The Enfield MkIII .476 cartridge had a heeled bullet. The base was .455 and the nose was .476". It also had a clay plug in the hollow recess of the base which was designed to be pushed deeper in the tapered recess and force the skirt of the bullet to engage the rifling better.

The .455 Webley MkII cartridge was the last service cartridge to carry the designation to be used in the Enfield: "Cartridge S.A., ball, pistol, Webley, cordite (MarkII). Also Enfield".

Interesting that the first ammunition used in the Enfield MkI was the preceeding government service cartridge, the .450 Adams, as supplies of the new .455 were not ready at the time the revolver was issued. (per Dowell "The Webley Story")

"The lockwork was derived from the Kaufman and Warnant's British Patent No. 5031 of 1878..."

The MkII was introduced in 1882. The MkI had checkered grips while the MkII had smooth. The front sight blade was also different. (Boothroyd "The Handgun").

".....the Enfield was issued to the Navy, the Royal Irish Mounted Constabulatory and the Canadian Northwest Mounted Police Force."

Nice Enfield mj1. Back in the 80's I had a .455 Webley/fosberry-1st automatic revolver (had no-idea what it was back then)...an old lady across the street gave it to me...sold it to a friends dad for $25...regrete it to this day...

OK. Not a hand cannon, but a cannon...

Feeding it will be the next guys problem. I have the original holster stored some place and when I find it the rig is gone.

Got to go start the Turkey soup.
