Mosin Front Sight Dilemma

Hey guys,

I recently purchased a mosin nagant barreled action from HMK Enterprises and have been putting on all the parts to make it into a shooter. I am having trouble with the front sight however. The notch on the front sight is either too thin or the groove on the barrel is too wide and the front sight slips through and doesn't stay in place.

What can be done to remedy this?

Center punch the bottom of the dovetail 5 times, slide sight globe in, sight in then stake front sight.

By dovetail do you mean the part that is soldered onto the barrel? What do you mean by staking the front sight?

Basically he means beat the crap out of the dovetailed section that the sight slides into to create some texture, then once you jam the sight in, use a flat punch to crush the seam between the dovetail and sight hood together.

Thanks Datamancer. I'm almost considering just using Threadlocker Blue. But I'm not sure what I'd do if the sight wasn't zeroed and the threadlocker dried...

do the staking as sugested, or super glue it in. would threadlocker even have anything to adhere to on that?

Went with the staking approach. Worked marvelously. Thanks fellas. Another dilemma solved thanks to Calguns!

Cut a shim out of beer or soda can. Place underneath and slide sight in. Use two if necessary. Leave them long (wings out the sides). Cut off wings when centered and tight.

Staking is an awesome approach.

If you end up wanting an adjustable sight, you can order one and I'll send you a prototype that allows a hidden set screw to adjust tension. I'd like feedback.

The only downside is that the adjustment range would suffer. By how much, I do not know -- and this is why I need someone to try the prototype!
