    German Reworked Gew.98

So I just bought a Gew.98, double dated Danzig 1917/1920 Its cut to the size of a K98k, but still has the original stock with the hand grips on the side of the stock, can anyone give me more info on this rifle? I know the the Waffen SS used alot of these rifles and from the pics I've sen, almost all of the rifles that had the Totenkopf marking were reworked Gew.98's The rifle below isnt mine but it looks alot like this.

The 1920 stamping indicates that it was property of Weimar Republic. What you probably have is a Gew 98 that was reworked as a 98k and later imported into the US.

WWII issued? Or did it sit in a warehouse from 1920-1945?

That's impossible to tell. I would think the condition of the weapon is a good indicator of its use. You can be assured it was on the continent during those years.

Need some more pics of the front band, left side rear band, and sights. Clear shots of any stamps on those parts too.
I was going to say a Kar98a or Kar98az, but too many things don't match up. What I can see, looks like a Danzig in a Brazilian 1908 stock with the 1908 stock hardware.

How would one tell if it was a Brazilian stock, because I'm pretty sure I saw I Weimar eagle on it. I just want to make sure I'm buying a German made and issued rifle, not a Brazilian bimbo gun that has no historic value other than a date.

You should find a Weimar Eagle or two stamped on the underside of the stock wrist, and also the rifle's serial #. There may or may not also be WW1 Imperial arsenal stamps on the buttstock as well.

If it's a true Kar98b, and not a transitonal GEW98, the bolt should be turned down, and a groove cut into the stock for the handle (similar to a k98 stock). A transitional GEW98 usually will retain the straight bolt handle, and have no bolt handle groove cut into the stock.

Also check to see how many numbers are matching. The Germans were pretty hardcore about issuing matching rifles. If it's a total M/M piece, it's aftermarket, and won't have much value, so be wary of paying too much for it.

There is a cut out on the stock and it does have a bent bolt, and as far as I know, almost every piece is matching. Its not import marked either which I enjoy, and there a little hook like thing on the bottom of the front barrel band.

Same lenght as the K98, just a little over 23 inches.
