Best Way to clean off cosmoline?

I'd like to hear people's best and most effective ways for cleaning off cosmoline. I've heard of different techniques and just want to know what worked for most people. BTW, this would be for taking the cosmoline off of a Mosin 91/30.

    Thanks in advance.

Hopes No. 9 and mineral spirits are what I use. I usually soak the bolt in the spirits in a plastic bag; shake it around every now and then. Oh and put the bag in another container since the mineral spirits will eat through the bag too.

scrub with a tooth brush :-)

Boiling hot water. Then WD-40. Then normal cleaning and lube.

Boiling hot water doesn't work when it's thick.

        DANGER:
You can bake it off, Flashpoint on cosmo is 350-375 degrees.
It will catch fire if it reaches this temp!

Another way is soak it in charcoal fluid/ diesel or gas. Obviously not the wood.
No matter your method, it SUCKS!

Kerosene or Lacquer thinner is what I have used in the past.

+1000 Thats exactly what i did for my Mosin. I also took cups of really hot water and poured the water cup after cup down the barrel, reciever etc. I also used a bore brush in between some cups.

I did mine in the summer so i took the stock and just sat it outside, fliping it over and wiping it down ever so often.

Throw all the metal parts in the dishwasher. No soap. Use another method for the wood parts. When the wife/girlfriend are not home.

use WINDEX for cleaning the cosmo off wood, as solvent will remove the finish on the wood. as for the METAL use hoppes #9 that has never dissapointed me. soak the bolt in hoppes solvent for a while so theres no sticky bolt issue.
