    Great-Grandpa's Springfield

Part of my inheritance from the homestead- Great-Grandpa bought this new in the cosmoline before the beginning of the last century from a traveling gun salesman who passed through Coos County, Or.
He used it for a elk and bear gun for a few years, then bought a 1894 Winchester new when they came out. ( I have that also-a 4 digit serial number made in November of '94. I'll post a pic or two of that later).
A little rust on the finish, but the rifling is good and the bore is shiny. How many do you see with the original bayonet?

The last time I shot this was when I was 12-13 (45 years ago)

I love trapdoors and that one is a beauty, I have a Springfield in 45-70. A newer model since I was unable to find an older one at the time. I would love to see a pic of the 94, I have a newer 94 in both 44 magnum and 30-30. Great rifles all around.

Whats so neat is these arent replicas or current production models, these are the real deal that started it all. Too cool!

I'm in love with the idea of traveling door-to-door gun salesman.

As I remember the story, he had a horse drawn wagon, and sold and repaired out of that. Quite the social event when he came through.

                  Winchester 94

So, my great-Grandpa bought this in 1895.
My Grandfather shot his first deer with it.
My Father and his two brothers shot their first deer with it.
38-55 was hard to find in the 60's (and I owned better rifles) so I broke tradition.
My son doesn't hunt, so I guess it's a Closet Queen now.

4-digit serial # made in November of 1894. The action is a little worn, and has a hitch half-way through the upstroke, but still shoots good.

The fact that the Springfield's rifling is shiny and still good is the amazing part. Usually dark and indeterminate.

Go get some 38-55 ammo and get your first deer with that rifle. Work on the son, or take the grandson when he comes along.

                        NICE goodies there!
The thing with firearms is that they are not like any other consumer product, simple ownership of one carries a lot of responsibility.

Some idiots are too busy knowing it all to ever learn anything

I concur. Is he just not into hunting at all, or did you not have many opportunities to take him? I know my Dad never took me camping and fishing as much as grandaddy took him. I'm trying to take my kids as much as possible.
