    Powder charge

Today I took my flask and cut the nipple down so its throwing 15gr. FFFG black to use on my 1851 navy 36. It will also throw around 10.7gr pyrodex.I was wondering if the 10.7gr. pyrodex is a safe load for the brass frame on the 1851.

    Thanks Dennis

The 36 Navy Colt will handle all the black powder you can put in it and still get the cylinder to turn.

I hope you know that black powder, while reported in grains is not measured by weight. The grains are weight equivalent of water in volume. Black Powder and water have about the same density of 1gm/cc.

As a result, while the weight may differ, a flask funnel cut to 15 "gr." will give 15 "gr." of volume for whatever powder you put in it.

It's always confusing since grains is not a measure of volume.

For Pyrodex and Triple 7, you need to reduce the volume.

        Doesn't your 1851 have a damaged frame?

Ok so based on what your telling me since I measured the weight of the FFFG on my powder scale and not by volume I actually have the funnel cut of so it throws about 12-3/4gr powder by volume. The manufacture says use a charge of FFFG between 9-12gr with the max being 22gr of FFFG or a max of 17gr pyrodex. So it looks like I should be ok where I am for now anyway and the differance in the weight between the pyrodex and the black dont matter its by volume so its 12-3/4gr. of powder regardless.

          Thanks Dennis

Yea the 1851 has a indented frame but it also had a loose arbor which I tightened up and it tightened up the gun pretty good. I dont know if I will shoot that one much but I bought a new pietta 1858 new army police 36cal. replica that I am going to be shooting

Black Powder and equivalents are charged by volume rather than weight. I know that the manufacturer recommendation for Triple 7 is to reduce the volume by 15% in comparison to a Black Powder FFFg charge.

In my experience, this recommendation seems to be pretty conservative. YMMV.

yep what he said. so the correct thing then if you measured 15 grains of goex by volume then cut the measure to only 15 grains. well no matter what you use it is 15 grains pyrodex triple7 or what ever. before doing any more cuts just buy yourself an inexpensive black powder measure.

http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shoot...3Bcat104436180 if you look at this one it has numbers on it. you push up the block to the charge you want then tighten the set screw. then pour in the powder. close the spout and pour. without messing up your flask.
