    I thought maybe I re-assembled it wrong, but I might just be losing my mind... Shouldn't I be able to put the safety "on" (to the rear) with the rifle unloaded and the bolt closed?
    I love the smell of Cosmoline in the morning... It smells like... History!

    If the hammer is cocked, yes. If the hammer is down, no. Had to pull my own Garand out just to confirm.
    I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

      If the safety is forced to the 'on' position without the hammer cocked there is a real danger of the tip on the safety piece being snapped off.
