Need help identifying a side by side remington

Ok so I acquired a Remington side by side shotgun which appears to be very very old. I do not have the external hammers to help with identification. It says "E. Remington & Sons Ilion N.Y." on the topside of the barrel. On the rear section under the barrel it says "patent ALGD 1871 APR161872", this part is hard to read so may not be exact. All serial numbers appear to be intact of 3622 on all parts. I have attached a couple of pictures but i can take any other pictures to help in identification, thanks in advance.

This doesn't really help, other than to perhaps rule out one model - According to Remington, the serial numbers for 1894 shotguns is 100,000 - 142,000

The 1894 is described as: "Remington's first hammerless double barrel shotgun"

So, if 3622 is the serial number (is it?) then I guess it can't be an 1894. Curious...

Oh! I just realized you may be telling us that it *is* an external hammer gun - but the hammers are missing. That's a horse of a different color!

That appears to be a fairly early model - it appears there were really only grades, not models specified during the "E. Remington & Sons" period.

Yes, it has external hammers however they are missing from this particular gun. Without the hammers I'm finding it hard to identify...

I did find some info that they added later patents as they went along - later versions may have other patent dates.

I would GUESS that it is a Model 1889, since that is the most common hammer Remington double. But that's just a guess. Too bad the hammers are missing since the '89s are very distinctive.

Try your question and pictures over at www.doublegunshop.com/BBS on their first forum, which is specifically for double shotguns. They may need more pix or more descriptions of the markings, but somebody will identify this gun. The earlier a Remington is, the harder to identify, since they were experimenting around a lot and had many models before the '89 became their standard hammer gun.

You could also ask them for a source for hammers, if anybody knows one, somebody there will!

It has to be an 1873 or 1876 based on the serial number. 3622 would only have come in one of those two models.

That's what I was thinking too. Are the sideplates intact? According to the site you posted, the M1873 has 3 screws on the sideplate, while the M1876 has 4 screws.

The side plates are intact, however I don't know what screws they are referring to on that website... Are the side plate and lock plate the same? I'm thinking it is an 1873 based on the fact that the barrels measure 29.5" and the couple 1873's I've found have stated a 30" barrel, where the 1876 show 28" barrels

I'm not the right guy to give the correct names to old gun parts - I was hoping you could figure it out from the picture. I'll try some more google-fu...

Barrel length usually doesn't tell you much of anything on vintage shotguns--back in the day you could get any length you wanted, although 26, 28, 30 and 32" were the "normal" lengths. And then there were those that were cut, either to open the choke or to get rid of a damaged bore....

It should be the sideplate where the hammer would normally be attached.

Maybe post a picture of that area and one of the gurus will interpret for us.

A clearer and larger version of your first picture would show it. For example, here's an 1873 with 3 screws...
