    What's it worth?

I've got a lead on a Romanian VZ.24 still in the cosmoline... what would you pay? I really want a Mauser, and My research tells me they are very nice shooters.

What about price? I'm thinking of offering $200.... he wants $250.

    Depends on condition, features...

$250 isn't unreasonable if it's really nice, $200 is probably more realistic though.

I've seen that rifle advertised around. I thought about responding but have enough new toys (for now). I'm from your area.

I was thinking about asking about whether it was scrubbed of its crest and other markings, what amount of bluing was left, etc. and what the furniture was like. In cosmoline, the bore would be a guess. But if it's in nice condition otherwise, it's cheaper than a nice m48 yugo (which is comparable but with a shorter chamber/bolt).

I have a czech vz24 and love it. But it's a stripped down, scrubbed beast and not worth 250 dollars. However this might be a nice (and somewhat rare) version. Romanians? Seen 2 advertised in my day.

Look at the bore. Best I would offer is $200.

Hard to look at the bore when still in cosmoline; don't think the owner is interested in cleaning before selling.

No... he's not. BUT.. if it's still in cosmoline, and he's had it for a long time... I think my chances at a decent to good bore are good, not like it's been in service as long as a Mosin! I offered him $200 & he accepted. I'll let you guys know how it turns out. I need to get something long to use as a tub... & a whole lot of hot water!
Going to go down to the local farm supply & see what they have in plastic bins, and my water heater is in my garage... should do the trick!

$200!?!? A few short months ago you COUDN'T GIVE THEM AWAY. Not because they are bad guns; they are infact, excellent Mausers... Vz-24's simply flooded the market not too long ago.

And this is experience talking. I had EASILY one of the nicest Vz-24's- nay - MAUSERS I've ever seen or owned. Tried selling it for $200 (how much I paid for it YEARS ago), and NOONE was interested. I ended up selling it at a HUGE loss.

My advice: Next time keep your eyes peeled & you can find a reasonably nice Vz-24 for dirt cheap.

                  I appreciate the info.

I'm O.K. w/ paying what I'm going to pay. It's local and I don't have to deal with shipping. The only C&R guns I ever see in my area are @ dealers. Then I have to pay for all the other crap. I reserved the right to check it out before I hand over any cash. If it's all beat to hell, then I'll call it off. But if it's in great shape, then I'll go for it.

I was thinking of bringing a heat gun or something to see if I can clear the cosmoline out of the barrel at least... so I can check the bore. Maybe some WD-40? It seemed to work really good at cleaning up the factory fixed 10rd. mags I got for my 2 SKS's.

So.. I'm going to check this Vz.24 out tomorrow. Anything in particular I should be looking for? Special markings, high or low serial #, etc?
