    CMP Ordering Hazzard

Back in June, I placed an order for a Garand with the CMP. I never heard back from them so I contacted them yesterday. They said they never received my order. I sent it using US Mail. What does this mean? My packet was either lost or stolen in the mail. (Lost. Yeah, right!)

Lets consider what was inside. My name, physical address, billing address, credit card information, social security number, physical description, CA DL number, a certified copy of my birth certificate, a copy of my Utah concealed carry permit (with photo), and of course the notarized forms.

This is a criminal's wet dream. I have no doubt what happened to it. A postal employee saw where it was addressed, and knew what that meant, so he stole it. Now he has ALL of my information.

Lesson learned. Don't trust the ****ing US Mail and their scumbag employees. Use FedEx for you CMP orders.

I always ship my CMP orders by overnight service, with tracking.
Stopped using the USPS 3 years ago since Fed Ex is more reliable, faster and cheaper.

So you sent all that personal info and failed to spend a couple of bucks for delivery conformation?

Sent it certified. But now I can't find the receipt. Didn't really think about it. Obviously, I should have. The several month wait that CMP was warning me about also made me complacent.

Yea I ended up shipping mine regular mail too because I didn't have an extra 45 min to drive to the USPS from UPS store (to get it notarized) to get it shipped out on my way to work. Now I'm concerned as well because I have not heard back from them for 3 weeks. I think I may have screwed up though, I just made a copy of my passport, I didn't know I needed a certified copy? I didn't think to send it Fedex doH!

If it was sent certified did you do return receipt? I would trust they got it, but lost it. On the safe side I'd sign up for a credit monitoring service for the next few months.

You don't need any copies "certified". As long as you sent copies of what they want and have the order form notarized, you will be okay.

I was experiencing issues with mail not being received for a couple of years. Mostly birthday cards for the kids with cash in them.

A couple of years ago, I received a letter from the postal inspector in Sacramento that a piece of mail was being held as evidence in a Federal trial. A photocopy was enclosed, a birthday card for my daughter with a check in it.

The mail was finally forwarded after a year. It turns out an employee at a mail sorting facility near Marysville was stuffing mail down his pants and opening it in the restroom to steal cash. He was convicted for felony mail tampering and theft.

Steal from my kids? Rot in jail, you bastard.

With that much personal information, you should have sent it registered mail, not certified mail. Certified mail only gives you proof that you mailed the letter. Registered mail is kept under lock and key and is tracked during every step of the mail delivery process.

the SSN field is optional. I have never sent anything with my SSN on it to them.

This is really more of a "sending anything important via USPS besides registered mail" hazard.

Not likely coincidence. That's around the right timeframe, and Chico mail went through there as well. I know it was happening to our mail for a couple of years before they caught the guy.

I've bought three rifles from CMP all through the US Mail.

If you're lucky your CMP order was eaten by mice at some sorting facility and not at home with a laid off disgruntled USPS worker.
