Rust on my Mosin

So I went shooting last weekend and my gun has been sitting all week (I did a thorough clean job of it before I put it away) and I just noticed that there is rust forming on the bolt right were the serial number is....whats the best way to get this off the bolt and how do I prevent this from happening in the future? I cleaned and oiled the bolt before storing it as well so im a little puzzled as to why there is rust at all

How did you clean it? Did you shoot corrosive ammo?

Did you oil it before you put it away? A little oil on the bolt will negate that problem unless you're keeping it in something that is trapping moisture against the rifle.

I shoot exclusively corrosive ammo through my mosin and have never had an issue with rust, just giving it a light coat of oil before it sits in the safe.

You could scrub it with a stiff plastic or bronze brush with some solvent, or CLP to get the rust off.

I cleaned it very thoroughly, its kept in a pretty airy environment, and Ive only shot commercial ammo through it and yes its well oiled, (ok except for the part on the bolt that has the rust, never thought about oiling that part)

I guess I'll scrub it off and see if it does it again....

Also, do not store it in a gunbag/case....not sure if you were. Another option is one of those gunsocks. They do not hold in moisture and often are silicon impregnated. Helping ward off rust!

I read to rub the edge of a nickle on rusty areas to get rid of it, I thought ...... ya, right. Tried it and it worked pretty good. Other people use bronze wool with good results.

I use the Winchester gun socks from WallyWorld. $4.98 and they keep things from getting beat up going in and out. I never store in a gun bag or case unless I have a few packets of silica I can throw in there.

curious what commercial ammo were you using? I had some rust issues using that white box steel cased tula stuff.
