The rifles marked MO (Ministerstvo Oborony, or Ministry of Defense). Contrary to the name, these are the rifles transferred from the Russian military to the "militarized/paramilitary security forces". Basically, government-hired security guards.

J&G Sales had a bunch of them not so long ago for $119, they might still have them. They went by "91/30 Hex Receiver Excellent Condition", or something to that tune. Basically, hex receiver non-laminated stock with all matching numbers (including the bayonet). If you go to their store, you can go through tons of them to pick the one you want. I went through maybe 30 or so, and picked one triple-date 1927 Izhevsk and one double-dated 1925 Tula. Basically, the price didn't depend on whether the rifles were MO marked, double/triple-date, etc. They were all "Hex Receiver 91/30s in excellent condition"

Looks like a real nice one, esp if the bore is good.

Thats what makes Mosin collecting fun - the mysterious history. There still is no concrete answer as to what MO is. I find it interesting that the years dont go past 1953 , the year Stalin died

I don't believe the Ministry of Defense (Министерство Обороны) theory. The Soviet Ministry of Defence was created in 1953, and most of the MO dates are before that, the latest I've seen is 1953. I'm more a fan of the Ministry of Education (Министерство Образования) theory. We know that there was required rifle training in Soviet schools, and at least with that theory the dates match up.

Nice find. Looks like both J&G Surplus and AIM Surplus are currently out of stock on the hex receiver 91/30's (I did not call, just looked at their website). They still have round receiver 91/30's. Local Big-5's had no Mosins at all a week or so ago (Orange, Tustin). The guy in Orange said that all of OC only got 3 of them and they sold immediately. They're back in the Sept 7th to 10th add at $119. Will have to see if they got more.

That [MO] is stamped on top of the fancy 'No' text (upper left side of the square surrounding MO) on the receiver, correct?
