do you mean the bolt became difficult to lift and operate? if so, "Sticky Bolt" can be attributed to a couple of problems.

    1. cosmoline in the bolt. take it apart and clean thoroughly. some people like to put the bolt pieces in a pot of boiling water to get all the cosmoline off. dry and oil well after that though

    2. could be ammo. is it lacquered cased ammo? some Mosins will have sticky bolt when using that.

    3. dirty chamber. clean that thoroughly as well

What you experienced is referred to as the "Mosin sticky bolt syndrome".
It seems to be caused by old baked on Cosmoline in the chamber or varnish from steel cased ammo.

Here are some links that might help.

If he's using surplus, make sure he uses Hopes #9 or similar to get the corrosive residue after shooting.

If you are using corrosive ammo. you need to clean with plain old water to get rid of the salt residue -- then your hoppes or other favorite brew.
