Garand purchase from out of state

    Hi all,

I'm looking at purchasing a M1 Garand from someone in another state and I called a local gun shop/range to see how much to have it shipped to them, they want $76 to take it in and $25 for the DROS...way too much.

Does anyone know of a place in the greater Sacramento area that won't charge so much?

    thanks in advance,

I have no idea. There are a couple of online firearms auction sites that list FFL's by the city or area. You could also try the CMP. They'll probably have a bit of a wait, but you can get a Service Grade for about $620 shipped to your front door. I have one. It's a very nice rifle. They may have up to a 120 day wait as they have yet to open and inspect their latest shipment.

The faster methods of acquiring a Garand will probably drive the cost above what the CMP sells them for.

another option: have a buddy with a C&R license buy it and then transfer it to you. Assuming the rifle is 50+ years old, your buddy can have it shipped straight to his door, and then he can just hand it to you without any paperwork on your end. If you have no buddies with a C&R license, PM me and maybe i can help you out (depending on where you're located)

and before any of you start: assuming that the C&R license holder isn't making a profit, then it's not "conducting business"...

Unfortunately I don't know of anyone with a C & R license. I am in the process of getting one myself, but I haven't even received the paperwork yet. I guess I can wait and get one from CMP after I get my C & R, but that's a ways off.

There are a number of ways to be qualified to receive a Garand from the CMP. Go to their website, download their order form, it's all on the 4th page... It should also be on one of their FAQ pages. The process is very simple, straightforward and doesn't require a C&R license... though one does satisfy a requirement.

Perfect example of how an easily-obtained $30 license can save you $$$ to buy more and more and more guns.

Getting my 03 FFL was one of the smartest things I've ever did done.

The CMP has years worth of M1 Garands in their inventory. No need to rush.

3-4 months ago when the CMP temporarily ceased Garand sales due to lack of inventory and also to focus on their M1 Carbines, the price of Field Grade and Service Grade were approaching $1k between private parties. Now with the availability of more Garands from the CMP for the next few years, those prices have taken a serious dip. In the last few weeks, I've watched $600 Garands sit on the classifieds for weeks. Just 3 months ago, a $600 CMP Garand would be sold in just a few hours.

BTW, my local FFL charges $45 + $25 for out of state transfers.

              Maybe I'll wait for my C & R then.

The one I was looking at has these specs (copied and pasted the guys wording):
The garand has been reparked and has a new walnut stock with USGI specs. It's not a fat Boyd's stock. Everything appears to be SA, except the barrel, which is a Danish VAR barrel that gauges between a 2 and 3. It is very nice without a single deficiency in the wood or parkerizing.

He wants $800 shipped + another $101 from the gun shop/range.

Forget that, just get one from the CMP. All it takes is some patience.

Yeah, I think I will. I'm going to call a local gun range tomorrow to see if they can assist with one of the CMP requirements.

i'd get the C&R license too once you get the application. If nothing else, you'll save enough from Midway and Brownells to make it worth it...
