My son ordered one of those Argentine Mauser you see advertised in Shotgun News. Since its from the 1890s he had it sent directly here. It came with the bolt dissasembled. I was trying to put it together last night while watching the Giants (!@#$%). Anyway, while pushing the spring against the firing pin, as it shows on their website, I snapped the tip of the pin off !@#$%!!!!!. Next time I'll use a small, deep socket against the spring sleeve on the pin and not put any force on the tip. Maybe I should just stick to working on cars.

What was the tip pressing against? I usually use a 2x4 which gets a pretty good dent in it from the tip.

I was actually using the bottom of a shoe that was handy. I think what I did wrong was accidently applying some sideways pressure and snap, the hundred and fifteen year old part broke. I really think putting a small, 8mm, deep socket in a vice and putting the spring base of the pin against that is a smarter way to do it. No stress on the tip of the pin that way.

This was one of the Argentine 1891s advertised by Recon Ordnance in Shotgun news? What condition is it in? They ship you the bolt internals and you have to assemble them yourself? Their add mentions that the bolts are stripped but not that they send you the internals. Which version did you get? Pictures perhaps?

Yes, its from Recon. Its the carbine, engineers carbine I think its called. I was a little disapointed with the gun. It has a repair to the stock that's not real impressive. Otherwise its in good shape, the metal is clean and the bore is nice.

You can check with them, but I think they are mostly antiques. My son, who's in the Air Force ordered it.

If it says Loewe Berlin on the left receiver rail, it's a pre 1899 Antique. If it says DWM, it's C&R. I have an incomplete list of DOM by serial for the 1891's, if you want me to check?

The side of the receiver says, MAUSER MODELO ARGENTINA 1891. Below that it says, MANUFACTURA LOEWE BERLIN. It has a crest on top of the receiver that looks like 2 hands around a hammer. There are several other small stamps on the receiver and bolt. The bore looks real good. Clean, no pitting and strong rifling. If it wasn't for the stock repair it would be a really nice gun. Recon advertises firing pins for $30, so not a catastrophic mistake.
