Try Cabelas for a rifle / musket. shipped to your door. Graf & Sons for BP, buy 5 lbs to make it worthwhile.

Try gunbroker. You can normally pick up a decent used muzzle loader for under $100.

What kind of muzzleloader. One of todays models? Or are you going to build it yourself, like a .50 cal Hawkens or a Kentucky? Cabela's is to pricey.

California has some ideas about how much powder you can have without a special permit.

The idea that 20 lbs of smokeless powder or a pound of black powder is okay, but that a little more is a felony makes my head hurt.

Great deals on T/C hawkens at gunbroker. Or CVA, or Lyman GPR I found my Hawken in an antiques/second-hand store for a song. I still had to put it on lay-away. :/ Anyway, that would be a great place to start. Or check pawnshops.. The rest of the stuff came from Cabelas. The guys at Bain & Davis in San Gabriel are blackpowder enthusiasts. Angeles Shooting Range sells BP to shooters who are shooting there. These guns could be shipped to your door. Feel free to pm..

I've thought about a muzzle loader. I wanted a musket to take out on independence day and shoot old school. I guess I'm not looking in the right places for one since the ones I saw were like 500.00

Monday I will be ordering a Lyman GPR kit from The Gun Works. I originally ordered one from Bud's Gun Shop. Bud's was really screwy. First it was to be delivered to my front door. Then they said after I ordered it that an FFL/01 dealer will be needed. Long story short. 5 days later I got my money back. Further more at Bud's there were hidden costs. No warranty. At The Gun Works no hidden costs, full warranty and shipped to my front door. I spoke with them on the phone the other day. VERY pleasant conversation. VERY helpful and answered all my questions. www.thegunworks.com

Thats FUD. Good thing you got your money back.

Great Plains are really nice rifles for the price. If you want to shoot round balls make sure you get the slower twist. They come in both 60 and 32 twist. The 32 twist is designed for hunting type bullets and will over spin a round ball and they dont shoot for beans. I have an older caplock that has a 48 twist (all you could get back then) and it shoots RB's really well up to about 60 grains of 3f. Heavier charges and accuracy suffers. For trail walk shoots, 60 grains is plenty.
The factory sights need to be replaced with a fixed California or Clove type sight set.
My Lyman rifle has won a ton of ribbons and turkeys with only a few mods. You're gonna like it.

                          I just bought 1 online
now have 2 - the best fun in shooting IMHO

You can find them almost anywhere
older CVA's are the cheapest and still shoot well

do you want traditional or new?

muskets are more authentic - and pricey

a great starter thats low cost is a bobcat from CVA
thay can be found for about 100 bucks ( didnt cost much more than that new)

you can also look for BP shooting competitions locally (they shoot @ High Desert Marksman range 1st sunday every month)
Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Looks like you can have 50lbs of BP in your house or apt.

Just got off the phone with Suzi (real nice lady at The Gun Works/owner) and placed my order for the Lyman .50 Great plains Rifle Kit (#603111). It has a 1:60 twist. The'll be shipping it to me on Monday. Now I got to order some rust brown and a couple of other goodies from Brownell's and I'll be set to build. And it won't be built over night.
