Ok first a few questions

1. are there any exceptions to the 16" min barrel length for centerfire C&R

2. if there are no exceptions to question #1 how difficult is it to obtain an sbr tax stamp in cali?

I have been eyeballing the sten or the lanchester/mp-28 or ppsh-41. I am aware and have no intention of keeping it full auto. Anyone have experience with any/all of these? others in the same category? I know the sten isn't the same look as the other 2 however I like it. Basically I want a handgun caliber and prefer a wood stock. In a carbine length.

yes, if it is a registered C&R SBR, then it is exempt from CA's SBR regs.

if it is a C&R SBR, it is easy to get a ATF Tax stamp to legally own it (provided that it does not fall under the catagory of an AW). But if it is not a C&R SBR, then you have to have a CADOJ Dangerous Weapons Permit, and those are virtually impossible to get.

those are MGs and can't be converted to semi-auto without destroying the receiver. At that point, when it is rebuilt with a new semi-auto receiver, it is no longer C&R and would be a modern SBR if it had a barrel <16", which you can't get in CA.

D'oh!!!!! I didn't even realize this. So by me however I do it basically recreating the receiver I have just created a one of a kind made by me for me weapon. regardless of the age of original design or date of manufacture.

If I understand your post correctly - Yes you can re-weld the receiver on your own -

yes i can. and I can manufacture a new receiver from various forms, however if my understanding is correct the instant this is done it is a new firearm designed after an old one and not a c&r.

Or have I succesfully confused myself?

I was admiring a sten build in another thread and would like to build one or actually I'd like to build an mp-28 or a ppsh-41. Now these came with short barrels @8" and I would rather not double the length of the barrel as In my opinion it will lose "the look".....

Is there any way to build a legal semi-auto configuration sbr? The overall lengths are already well past the minimums.....

Or is there a carbine length wood stocked ww1/ww2 looking semi that uses handgun ammo that I've forgotten?

I mean really why was the minimum barrel length law writen? I understand (well not really) the overall minimum length.

So if I have a C&R shotgun and want to take the barrel to less than 18", I can submit a Form 1 to the ATF and if approved (received the $200 tax stamp), I can then make my C&R shotgun into an Short Barrel Shotgun "SBS" without any additional paperwork from the CA DOJ???

People used to be able to do this. But a couple of years ago I think ATF started saying that cutting a C&R shotgun down removed the C&R status of the shotgun. So now a Californian would need to find an SBS that was cut down and registered under the NFA at least 50 years ago.
